Porcupines are those short little rodents that you may see from time to time in the woods. They are known for their coat, which is laced with sharp spines, otherwise known as quills, that put fear into people more than a skunks rearend!
These little guys get a bad reputation as they are commonly associated with painful thorns being stuck in you! But, that is really all that this is, fear. A dog has just enough potential to harm you as a porcupine does. As with all animals, if we treat them with respect and allow enough distance between us and them, then we are usually fine. The main thing you would really have to worry about is pets. Dogs especially love to bark and attack these creatures, often times coming very close to the animals. This is where the porcupine's greatest defense comes into play. Dogs have been known to get hundreds of quills stuck into their snouts from a single swipe of a porcupine's tail. So, take heed when around these animals, especially if you have young ones or children with you. As long as you respect them, then they will, in return, respect you. If you would like more information about the porcupine, then we invite you to visit the extensive wikipedia article on them. Thanks!
